The eVULVAing Project
"Why do people say ‘Grow some balls?’ Balls are weak and sensitive.
If you wanna be tough, grow a vagina. Those things can take a pounding.”
-Betty White
The vision for The eVULVAing Project derives from the God-given marvel of a woman’s body. Such an incredible machine, it's hard to believe the amount of abuse such a thing can take! The criticism and disrespect vulvas and vaginas receive for their mere appearance and functional structure has caused endless years of shame in women towards their own bodies. Ironically, a body part that is highly desired, not to mention, vital for the longevity of the human race.
So, why then is it so ill-treated?
The origin of this project began after I engulfed myself in childbirth books and studied the history of it, its process and developments. Soon, I realized the true magnificence and power of the female genitalia, and how often we hand over that power, or even worse, allow that power to be stripped from us. Most women doubt the capabilities of their uterus and vaginas, and are uncomfortable with, dare I say, fear their own bodies.
But since then, the idea has evolved and incorporated other messages like: body image, labia shame, sexual insecurity, and abuse. Also Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) which is horrifically, still enforced in some cultures in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Nigeria has just banned it.
In response, I decided to produce a large body of work, painting multiple vulvas from various women of all backgrounds, all
ages (18+), practices and occurrences. Using willing participants as reference, I will be painting one vulva per participant, accumulating enough paintings to create a wall of fearless warriors!
Some of you may recall artist Jamie McCartney's , "The Great Wall of Vaginas", where he made 400 plaster molds of various women's vulva's and displayed them on 10 panels. McCartney's message was to signify the uniqueness and individuality of each and every vulva; hoping to decrease the desires of newly fad, labia corrections.
My efforts are to educate both woman and men about the diversity of a woman's genitalia and for woman to hone in on their inner animal and empower themselves with its primal and very natural function! A woman's body is made for creating, birthing, and nurturing their young; Not to be discredited and/or manipulated by society installing fear and anxiety to women. Nor should we be influenced by what people say our vulvas should look like.
